AP Investigation: Flooded toxic waste sites in Houston area inundate homes

Note: I spent days in a small motorboat reporting from toxic waste dumps that had been flooded during Hurricane Harvey. Most of these industrial waste sites were located in impoverished neighborhoods. The floodwaters were carrying all manner of pollutants. Neither federal nor state health officials had responded or communicated with residents. This video was shot during our reporting, and later used to support our reporting after the Trump administration attacked it as inaccurate.

Impact: This story sparked the EPA to launch a multi-year, $115M clean up of the San Jacinto River’s Superfund site.

Following the story: AP finds climate change risk at hundreds of toxic Superfund sites.
